Flu Vaccination Guide

The 2010/2011 flu shot is a trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine, containing three strains of influenza that are expected to circulate in the population this year. It includes H1N1 A and two other strains: H3N2 influenza A Perth and influenza B Brisbane. So you only have to roll up your sleeve once this year!

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, the following groups are cautioned NOT to get the flu shot:

  • Children under 6 months of age
  • People who have had a previous anaphylactic (severe allergic reaction) to any element of the vaccine, OR
  • People with a hypersensitivity to eggs (e.g. hives, swelling of mouth and/or throat, breathing difficulty); OR
  • People experiencing a high fever, OR
  • People who have previously experienced Guillain-Barré Syndrome within 8 weeks of receiving a seasonal flu vaccine.
