Flu Vaccination Guide

Please be advised that public flu shot clinics are now closed. For more information on when and how to obtain a flu shot, speak with your health care provider. The information in this chart will be updated next flu season, beginning October 2010.

National Resources

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, the following groups are cautioned NOT to get the flu shot:

  • Children under 6 months of age
  • People who have had a previous anaphylactic (severe allergic reaction) to any element of the vaccine, OR
  • People with a hypersensitivity to eggs (e.g. hives, swelling of mouth and/or throat, breathing difficulty); OR
  • People experiencing a high fever, OR
  • People who have previously experienced Guillain-Barré Syndrome within 8 weeks of receiving a seasonal flu vaccine.

Who is it available to first?

Primarily seniors first

Currently available to all residents of British Columbia

When can everyone else get it? Anyone under the age of 65 who is eligible for the seasonal flu vaccine can get it at the same time as their H1N1 vaccine. (They are two separate vaccinations) Currently available to all residents of British Columbia
Where can I get it?

The vaccines are still available through Public Health Units, physicians and trained pharmacists

Call your public health unit or family physician to find out where and when you can get vaccinated

How much will it cost?

No cost to those at high risk for complications from the flu or for those in close contact with high-risk individuals

No cost to residents of British Columbia

  • individuals age 65 or older
  • children aged six to 23 months
  • adults or children with heart or lung disease, or other chronic illnesses
  • pregnant women
  • close household contacts of anyone above
  • anyone residing in a long-term care home or assisted living facility
  • health care workers
  • first responders (police officer, fire fighter, paramedic)

**Please note that in some areas of the province, H1N1 vaccination will be available at the same time as seasonal flu vaccines for those who qualify

  • people aged 65 and older;
  • pregnant women;
  • children aged 6 to 23 months;
  • household contacts of people at high risk for influenza complications; and
  • people with serious chronic health conditions.

When can everyone else get it? People not included in the above groups may obtain the flu shot at their doctor’s office or at their work if a flu shot clinic is available Currently available to all New Brunswick residents

Who is it available to first?

High risk groups:

  • Seniors;
  • adults and children with chronic illnesses;
  • those age 6 months to 18 years with conditions treated for long periods with acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin/aspirin derived medications);
  • people who live with or care for someone in one of the above groups;
  • children 6 to 23 months of age at the time of their first influenza vaccine administration;
  • pregnant women;
  • all residents of long-term care/group facilities;
  • people living in a home where a newborn is expected during the regular influenza season (November to April); and
  • anyone who lives with or cares for children less than 24 months of age.
